We might not want to admit it, but, sometimes, reading a book can be boring! Even when a book is really good, it can still be overwhelming because it’s so text-heavy. With graphic novels, a lot of the context is now in the art, which is just a different but fun way for readers to receive the same information. And for kids, reading should be fun, which is why I think graphic novels/comics are such a good fit!
I admit, I haven’t been able to read all year long myself! But if I were to try it, I’d start by setting myself a daily goal of how many pages I want to read. Then, for each day I hit that goal, I add change to my piggy bank—even just something small, like a dime or a quarter. If I were to do this every day, I could save almost $100 by the end of the year (I even checked online to be sure!) and use the money I saved as a reward. I could also treat myself once a month instead of waiting until the end of the year. I’d probably go to a really good café or dessert shop that’s near me. That’s how I would celebrate reaching my goal of reading consistently.
And who knows, if I’m diligent enough, then at the end of the year I might have even been inspired by what I’ve read to write another book or make more art!
